Often some of the best moments or purchases come when I decide to completely embrace my geek side. This tenth doctor dress was too perfect to pass up, especially as I can pair it with my TARDIS necklace and run around with my sonic screwdriver feeling pretty awesome. The pin on the blazer reads "I <3 <3 the doctor" which I got from my Europe trip to Cardiff and the doctor who experience. Pretty much this is one of the coolest outfits out there. 

The Fantasy of Science Fiction

       It's impossible for me to deny how much I love science fiction and fantasy. I grew up on books, movies, and TV shows stemmed from Sci-Fi and Fantasy. Star Trek is the first TV show I remember ever watching, I've probably seen The Next Gen more times than I can count. Fantasy was more the world of books I was submerged into. The Chronicles of Prydain and of Narnia are the tales that I remember most from my childhood. As I've grown these genres have become more and more a part of my life. To me being a nerd, as people like to call it, was never something to shy away from or be ashamed of, I never thought that I should be looked down on because of my tastes. More recently this little love of mine has been something I've loved embracing all the more. I enjoy using it to throw people off their game. One glance at me and they see some girl into fashion and clothes, but my phone comes out all decked out in a Doctor Who and I start talking a minute a mile about comic books, Joss Whedon, and Star Trek. My Netflix list is swallowed up in science fiction shows and my bookcases are overwhelmed with fantasy and superheroes. My references can be brought back to the world of Harry Potter, Star Trek, and Merlin. If I could chose to have any pet in the world, it would be a dragon - they are real, don't make me come over there. 

         This doesn't limit me, because despite all of this, two of favorite books aren't considered either fantasy or science fiction. The Count of Monte Cristo and Oliver Twist, two classics and two of the books I love most.

            It reminds me how your tastes aren't stuck in one field, even if it's your passion. It's interesting how one thing can be your focus, your love, but when it comes down to it the thing you treasure most can have little to do with that one great love. I'm sure there is some great meaning under this, something that can be uncovered and taught, but I guess for right now it doesn't matter so much.

One of my favorite quotes is by Lloyd Alexander (who wrote the Prydain Chronicles), saying: 

"Fantasy is hardly an escape from reality. It's a way of understanding it."

 I think that far too often people look at those that do retreat into fantasy and science fiction as those that seek to hide from the real world. But for me, just as Lloyd put it, it's all about understanding the real world and accepting it. Somehow between everything that we find impossible in reality, but are accepted in these fictional worlds, it's easier to see the real world without finding it too difficult to survive in, We take those words that we have read, those scenes we have watched and use them to accept what is right in front of us. 

        I've struggled with accepting just who I was for most of my life, far too often fearing what people would say or what they would think. But when it comes down to it, you can hardly break away from that which you love most, as it is one the greatest parts of you. And, besides, why would you want to? In this world it can be so hard to find joy and passion, so if you do manage to grab onto something that gives you it, why in the world would you want to let it go?

Reims and Cardiff

Doctor Who Experience in Cardiff, Wales

Our next stop was France, but not before I got to go to Cardiff and visit the Doctor Who Experience! Cardiff was breathtaking and all the Doctor Who moments were a serious plus. I got to go with a fellow Whovian, which always makes the experience even more enticing. But Cardiff was just a day trip and after the UK, we hustled over to France. 

While we stayed in Paris we took a few day trips elsewhere and one was to the historical city of Reims-also well known for their champagne. 

London Calling

Another reminder about far behind my blog is, last summer I went to Europe with some friends and just now I'm getting the pictures up. If you follow my instagram you might have already seen some of these beauties-I tried to restrain myself and not post too many pictures. We'll see how that goes. This is just the first in a row of posts of Europe pictures to come.

We flew into London and stayed there for three days. Even though I've lived in Europe a few years ago, it was my first time in London. From hanging out by the Thames to St Peters and then of course the last blue police box at Earl's Court, I loved it all so terribly. The only thing I could of done without was the surprising heat wave. 

I've met a duchess

When lacking for words when meeting someone new this is one way to get the conversation going. It is definitely something that people do not expect you to say. Not to brag, but it is true. Of course at the time I had no idea, I found out later. Apparently, they did not want to overwhelm me. I was already overwhelmed, I was speaking a new language, hanging out with people I barely knew, and thrown into a completely different culture.

On a different subject, because I'm still fighting back the sickness and haven't had the chance to take photos yet, I thought I'd post some really old ones. These are from late July/early August. My brother snapped these photos for me. Just a little warning, my true colors come out in these photos

I've mentioned before, briefly, that I love science fiction. Back in the summer when my brother spotted someone with a TARDIS in their yard, I knew I had to get some pictures with it. Being very brave, I'm normally shy, I went to the house and asked if I could take photos with it. Obviously, they said yes. 

The inspiration for the outfit came from one of the doctor's companions-Amy Pond. Her outfits tends to consist of mini skirts, tights, leather jackets, and boots. The discovery of the TARDIS was good timing, as just a few weeks earlier I had received my sonic screwdriver in the mail. I'm a geek and I admit it happily.

A Bajoran Starfleet Officer

I'll admit it, I'm kind of a sci-fi geek. I used an XXL shirt from Target and made it into a Star Trek uniform. I used this tutorial. I wore fake eyelashes as I wanted to keep the sixties theme. I've always wanted to have a Bajoran nose, but after a while the glue began to itch and made my nose all bright red. I still have some  alterations that need to be done to the costume, like making the neckline lower. I hope that I will get a chance to wear it again, specifically to a star trek convention. Okay, I'm a big sci-fi geek. We aren't even going to get into Doctor Who and all the other obsessions of mine.
